HISTORY
History of the Koinè project

The Koinè project was born of the passion and expertise of Michèle Laliberté, professor of translation at the Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO), and a specialist in theatrical translation and audiovisual subtitling.
During a training course on theatrical surtitling organized by the European College of Literary Translators in Seneffe, Belgium, she deepened her knowledge in this innovative field.
Back in Quebec, Michèle Laliberté incorporated this skillset into her Adaptation of Texts course, and realized that not only was there no Canadian surtitling software specifically designed for live performance, but that the tools available did not meet the ever-growing needs of users. Faced with this void, she decided to act.
She contacted Ottawa’s Théâtre La Catapulte, which agreed to host her project to develop a software program truly adapted to the digital age and the needs of artists and technicians in the performing arts.
To carry out this initiative, Michèle Laliberté collaborates with Nadia Baaziz, a professor in UQO’s Computer Science and Engineering Department, and Collab Machine (Pierre-Luc Thivierge), a company specializing in digital collaboration solutions. Nadia Baaziz contributed in particular to the phases of analysis and specification of requirements, as well as to the verification and validation of the software. Technical development was entrusted to François Prenoveau of Gotologic, who became the software’s in-house developer.

This software was developed thanks to a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, awarded to Théâtre Catapulte (Ottawa), in partnership with UQO (Université du Québec en Outaouais), and to the collaboration of Collab Machine and Gotologic, as well as the support of key partnerships with: Théâtre d’Aujourd’hui, Ex Machina, l’Opéra de Montréal and the Festival TransAmériques (FTA).
